Upwork publishes its client fees. You pay the freelancer's rate plus a service fee on every payment: 5% on the Basic plan (3% for eligible US clients paying by checking account), or 10% on Business Plus (8% by checking account). Basic also has a one-time contract initiation fee of $0.99-$14.99 per contract. Freelancers set their own rates, and Upwork says software developer rates on its marketplace "range from $10 to $100 per hour," with experts at $150 or more.
That fee buys access to a marketplace. Screening, day-to-day management and coordination stay with you. The freelancer you pick. On a $10-$100+ range, the rate matters far more than the fee. Location, seniority and track record all shape it.
Your plan. Basic has the lower fee per payment. Business Plus has a higher fee and adds the Expert-Vetted filter and AI shortlists.
Your screening time. On the Basic plan, Upwork's own hiring guide tells clients to review proposals, GitHub and portfolios themselves. That time doesn't appear on an invoice.
Your management time. You direct each freelancer day to day. If you need several people working as a team, you assemble and coordinate them, and time-zone overlap depends on each person.
