Turing vs Upwork: which to choose (and a third option)

One sells quoted AI build work to enterprises. The other is an open freelance marketplace. Here's how they differ, and the better option for most US teams.

Disclosure: we're Ryz Labs, and we compete with the companies on this page. Here's why we think we're the right call for most teams, with sources for every fact about the others.

The short answer

Turing and Upwork sell very different things. Upwork is an open marketplace: you post a job, pick a freelancer, pay their rate plus a published 5% or 10% client fee, and screen and manage the work yourself. Turing says it helps "frontier labs improve models and enterprises deploy agentic systems," and sells quoted AI build work, pods and forward-deployed engineers from a global network.

For most US teams that want senior engineers inside their own team on US hours, or an AI pod team that builds and ships inside their own cloud, the better choice is Ryz Labs. You get top 1% senior engineers within about one hour of US time zones, AI pods with systems in production, and a scoped plan, a price and the names of your people before you sign.

How Turing works

Turing was founded in 2018 and is based in San Francisco. Its core business, according to Sacra, supplies training data, evaluations and RL environments to frontier AI labs. For enterprises it sells Turing Intelligence in three parts: Advise (strategy and scoping), Augment (AI-native talent embedding) and Build (production systems and agentic workflows, starting with rapid prototyping). It also sells Turing pods and forward-deployed AI engineers. Turing raised a $111M Series E at a $2.2B valuation in March 2025. It doesn't publish pricing.

How Upwork works

Upwork is a NASDAQ-listed online work marketplace headquartered in Palo Alto. Clients post jobs and hire independent freelancers and agencies on hourly or fixed-price contracts, then manage the work themselves. It says it has 18M+ freelancers across 180 countries, and its FY2025 10-K reports 785K active clients and $787.8M in revenue. Fees are published: 5% on Basic (3% for eligible US clients paying by checking account) or 10% on Business Plus, which adds an Expert-Vetted filter and AI shortlists. Enterprise programs run through Lifted, an Upwork Company.

Why Ryz Labs is the better choice

Senior engineers inside your team, vetted before you meet them. On Upwork, screening is your job. With Ryz, it's done before you see anyone. We've interviewed tens of thousands of engineers, and only the top 1% make it: recruiters source, our in-house ARC system ranks the pipeline, every candidate goes through a structured NTRVSTA AI interview, and recruiters review before and after. AI scores are advisory; people decide. Our engineers then join your standups, your repos and your roadmap from week one. See our vetting process.

New York hours for the whole team. Our Latin American engineers work within about one hour of US time zones, so review, pairing and decisions happen the same day. On both Turing and Upwork, working hours depend on who you get.

AI pod teams that ship to production. A typical pod is about 7 senior engineers, including a tech lead, an ML engineer and backend engineers, working inside your cloud (AWS, Azure, GitHub, Postgres, with Anthropic and OpenAI models), with weekly demos. One pod built fraud detection for a global fleet company that scored 244K+ invoices in under 30 seconds each and surfaced $5.94M in fraud confirmed by the client's fraud team. Others took compliance review of 8,000+ documents from days to hours for a global capital management firm and built an AI voice platform with 1M+ outbound calls. See our case studies.

Names before you sign, one contract after. Our quote comes with a scoped plan, a price and the names of the people who would do the work. You sign one contract with Ryz; our engineers work with us as independent contractors, and we handle paying them. Fortune 500 engineering teams trust us, across every industry, including financial services.

Questions

Can I still hire developers on Turing like on Upwork?

Turing's site leads with AI labs and enterprise agentic systems, with talent embedding under its "Augment" offer. If you want top 1% senior engineers embedded in your team on US hours, Ryz does exactly that. See Turing pricing.

Which is cheaper?

Upwork publishes its fees, and freelancers set their own rates, which Upwork says run from $10 to $100 per hour for developers. Turing quotes per engagement. Ryz quotes per team, with the names of your engineers included. See Upwork pricing.

Which has better US time-zone overlap?

Ryz. Our engineers work within about one hour of US time zones. On Upwork it depends on the freelancer you choose, and Turing staffs from a global network.

Which is better for building an AI system?

For a dedicated team that builds inside your own stack and ships to production, Ryz Labs. Our pods have systems live, from fraud detection to an AI voice platform with 1M+ outbound calls. Talk to us for a scoped plan.
