Disclosure: we're Ryz Labs, and we compete with the companies on this page. Read it with that in mind. We've flagged every case where we'd send you elsewhere.
Upwork is the biggest open freelance marketplace. You post a job, review proposals, and hire freelancers directly, with published client fees of 5% (Basic) or 10% (Business Plus). It's cheap and fast for scoped work. People look for alternatives when they're hiring developers for bigger or longer jobs. On the Basic plan, technical screening is on you, and Upwork's own guide tells you to review GitHub and portfolios yourself. Time zones and continuity depend on each freelancer. And if you hire several people, coordinating them is your job. If you need a small, well-defined task done this week, stay on Upwork. It's the right tool. If you need vetted developers, or a team, the options below each solve a different part of that problem.
We're the opposite end of the spectrum from a marketplace. We place senior Latin American engineers inside your team: same standups, same repos, roadmap from week one, all within about an hour of US time zones. We do the screening up front: recruiters source, our in-house ARC system ranks the pipeline, every candidate does a structured NTRVSTA AI interview, and people make every decision. Only the top 1% make it, and Fortune 500 engineering teams trust us. We also run AI pod teams that build AI systems inside your cloud and ship them, as our case studies show.
Where we're not the right fit: small, short or one-off tasks, anything outside software, or engineers outside the Americas. Upwork, Toptal and Arc are better for those. We also don't publish prices. Full comparison: Ryz Labs vs Upwork.
If what you want from Upwork is a freelancer but without screening hundreds of proposals, Toptal is the classic upgrade. It says fewer than 3% of 200,000+ yearly applicants are accepted, average time to match is under 24 hours, and you can trial for up to two weeks without being billed if you're not satisfied. The catch: Clutch lists Toptal at $100-$149/hr, well above typical Upwork rates, and time-zone overlap depends on the freelancer.
Arc keeps much of Upwork's transparency and adds vetting. It publishes freelance rates, says its freelancers are the "Top 2%" after a coding assessment, project and interviews, and offers a risk-free trial of up to two weeks. It also hires full-time at 20% of salary with a 3-month replacement guarantee. The catch: Arc places individuals, so you still manage them, and US overlap isn't guaranteed.
Lemon.io feels closest to Upwork's speed, but with screening done for you. It says matching takes about 24 hours, only 1% of applicants pass a senior-engineer interview, and there's no minimum on hours. The catch: client rates aren't published, and its own description of the pool is mostly Eastern European, so check overlap with New York.
Gun.io says 70% of its currently engaged developers have 10+ years of experience, and that about 100 of roughly 1,000 monthly applicants are approved. It shows the full price on each profile and handles contracts and payments. The catch: no time-zone commitment, no published trial, and thin public reviews.
Stay on Upwork for small, well-scoped work: a landing page, a bug fix, a one-off integration. Its published fees (5% on Basic, 10% on Business Plus) and its rate range (Upwork's guide says $10 to $100 an hour for most software developers) are hard to beat. Stay if you want to pick from the biggest pool, with Upwork claiming 18M+ freelancers in 180 countries, or if you need a niche skill. Stay if you value escrow and payment protection on every contract. And if you're a large company that wants a contingent-workforce program, Upwork's Lifted business offers staff augmentation and EOR.
Consider moving if you're spending more time screening than building, if a key freelancer has become a de facto team member, or if you need guaranteed New York hours. Our guides to developer staffing for startups and staff augmentation for senior engineers cover the next step.
For freelancers, Toptal, Arc and Lemon.io all screen before you see anyone. For senior engineers embedded in your team on US hours, that's us.
Probably not for small tasks. Upwork's open marketplace and published fees are usually the cheapest way to get scoped work done. Arc is the most transparent vetted option, with published rates of $15-$110+/hr.
Ryz Labs places Latin American engineers within an hour of US time zones. The others are global, so check each person.
Our AI pod teams are dedicated pods of senior engineers that build together inside your stack. If you need AI engineers or a full pod, talk to us.
