Full disclosure: we're Ryz Labs, and we're on this list. So yes, we're biased. Here's what we'd actually tell a friend, including when you should hire someone else. Every fact about Azumo and the other firms comes from what they publish or from their Clutch listings, with sources at the end.
Azumo is one of the few firms in this market that publishes a price, and it prices output, not people: $499 to $899 per Delivery Unit, a defined and testable piece of working software. So the question that decides your shortlist is simple. Are you buying finished features against a scope you can write down today, or engineering capacity that follows a roadmap that will change? If it's features, Azumo is hard to beat on clarity. If it's capacity, compare firms that price people.
Azumo is a San Francisco nearshore firm that says it has built production AI since 2016, works from Latin America on US time, and is SOC 2 certified. It sells three ways: dedicated teams, staff augmentation, or a full project build. Its pricing page lays out tiers: Starter at $899 per Delivery Unit for MVPs and single features, Growth at $699 for full product builds, Platform at $499 for enterprise programs and multi-phase platforms, and Custom by conversation.
Buyers who find Azumo usually want certainty. They have a defined MVP or feature list and want a price and timeline before work starts. That works well when the scope is stable. It is harder when the work is research-heavy, as AI systems often are: you learn what to build by building it, and the scope moves every sprint.
Azumo's staff augmentation rates aren't published, and neither are rates at the other firms here, except ours.
We price people, and we publish it: mid-level engineers $7,000 to $10,000 a month, senior $10,000 to $15,000, leads quoted per team. Ryz engineers work on your team, reporting to your leads, so when the scope changes on a Tuesday, the plan changes on Tuesday too. For AI work, our AI pod teams build in your cloud and repos and hand the system over when it's done. A team can start in under two weeks once you say go.
You meet each engineer by name before the engagement starts. Only the top 1% of the tens of thousands of engineers we interview make it. Our pods built an AI voice platform that has made 1M+ outbound calls and an AI real-estate agent that runs 24/7. You own all code and IP. Try our AI development cost calculator to size a team.
Where we're not the right fit: if your scope is fixed and you want a price per feature up front, Azumo's model is the better match. If you want a self-serve freelancer for a short gig, Toptal fits better. See Ryz Labs vs Azumo.
BairesDev says it has 4,000+ engineers across 100+ technologies, more than 500 client companies and teams ready in 2-4 weeks. It sells staff augmentation, dedicated teams led by its own tech PMs, and outsourced projects.
Where BairesDev beats us: breadth, and the option to outsource a whole project. The catch: rates aren't published, and Clutch lists a $50,000+ minimum project.
Gorilla Logic has more than 20 years in nearshore engineering. It sells staff augmentation, Gorilla Pods, multi-stream delivery and Gorilla Logic Construct, and says average client tenure is 8.5 years.
Where Gorilla Logic beats us: long relationships with vendor-led pods across product, platform and QA. The catch: Clutch lists a $250,000+ minimum project.
HatchWorks AI is an Atlanta firm that refocused entirely on AI after November 2022. It runs strategy (GenROI, 4 to 8 weeks), build (GenDD, first production release in 8 to 12 weeks) and adoption (GenEQ), and says no long-term contract is required.
Where HatchWorks beats us: if you don't yet know which AI use case to fund, it starts with that question. The catch: price is scoped per business outcome, not published.
Toptal is a global freelance network that says average time to match is under 24 hours. Each new engagement starts with a trial period, and you aren't charged if you aren't satisfied.
Where Toptal beats us: one person, fast, with no team-sized commitment. The catch: you manage each freelancer yourself, and overlap depends on the individual.
If your roadmap will change and you want senior people who change with it: Ryz Labs.
If you need lots of engineers across many stacks: BairesDev.
If you're planning a multi-year nearshore program: Gorilla Logic.
If you need to decide what AI to build first: HatchWorks AI.
If you have a written scope and want a fixed price per feature: stay with Azumo. Publishing that price is a real advantage.
For nearshore teams, BairesDev, Gorilla Logic and Ryz Labs. For AI programs, HatchWorks AI. For freelancers, Toptal. Our Azumo alternatives page covers more options.
Azumo defines it as "a defined, testable piece of working software": a feature or sub-feature with its own acceptance criteria. It prices projects as a set of these units.
Fixed price suits stable scope. Paying for time suits work that changes as you learn. Our guide to fixed price vs time and materials walks through it.
All of them in some form. Azumo runs its own open-weight platform, Valkyrie. HatchWorks AI is AI-only. Ryz AI pod teams build in your stack. Our list of AI development companies compares more.
