Best staff augmentation for scaling engineering teams

Six options for Series B and growth-stage engineering leaders who need to add senior capacity fast without breaking how the team works.

Heads up: we're Ryz Labs, so we have skin in this game. What follows is the advice we give buyers on calls, including the times we tell them to go with someone else.

TL;DR

When a growth-stage team scales, the deciding question is: will the new people make your existing engineers faster or slower? Juniors and loosely managed contractors add review load. Senior engineers who join your rituals and own services take load off. So weigh seniority and fit above headcount and speed.

Why scaling teams are different

Growth-stage teams have a roadmap that's bigger than the team, and a team that's already busy. Every new engineer costs your seniors time: onboarding, code review, answering questions. If you add five people who each need a lot of help, you can ship less for a quarter, not more.

That's why seniority matters more at this stage than at seed. You need people who can read your codebase, pick up a service, and run with it. You also need them in your working hours, because a growing team runs on fast feedback.

And plan for retention. If someone leaves after six months, you pay the onboarding cost twice. Ask every vendor how long their engineers stay, and who replaces them if they don't.

Scaling teams usually need one of three things

  1. Senior engineers to own new services as the product grows.
  2. A burst of capacity for a launch, migration, or new market.
  3. New disciplines, like data, product, or design, that the team doesn't have yet.

1. Ryz Labs (us)

Best forSeries B and growth-stage teams adding senior engineers who make the team faster
PricingCustom quote, scoped per team
Talent based inLatin America, within ±1h of US time zones

We place senior Latin American engineers inside your team. They join your standups, work in your repos, and follow your roadmap from week one, within an hour of US time zones. As you grow, we can add data, product, and design people the same way, so you don't need a new vendor for every discipline.

Why we rank first: scaling well is about adding people who reduce load on your seniors. We're trusted by Fortune 500 engineering teams, and our vetting is built for that. Recruiters source, our in-house ARC system ranks the pipeline, candidates go through structured NTRVSTA AI interviews, and recruiters review everyone before and after. AI scores are advisory; people decide. Only the top 1% make it, and you run the final interview. When you're ready to build AI systems, our AI pod teams can join as a dedicated team.

Where we're not the right fit: if you need someone on hourly terms for a short gig, a freelance network like Toptal is faster to start and stop. If you're scaling into Europe or Asia time zones, Andela's global network fits better. We don't publish prices or a trial.

2. BairesDev

Best forAdding many engineers or whole squads across many stacks
PricingNot published
Talent based inMainly Latin America

BairesDev says it has 4,000+ engineers across 100+ technologies and that "96% of our placements are the right fit on the first try." It offers staff augmentation, dedicated teams, and outsourcing. Clutch shows 4.9/5 from 63 reviews.

Why it fits: when you need volume, BairesDev has it. The catch: some Clutch reviewers mention early churn and rate increases, which matter a lot while you're scaling. See Ryz Labs vs BairesDev.

3. Howdy

Best forBuilding a long-term LatAm team with benefits and offices
Pricing15% management fee on top of the engineer's cost; no rate card
Talent based inLatin America (city hubs across the region)

Howdy employs LatAm engineers through EOR as dedicated members of your team, with offices, benefits, and coaching. It publishes its 85/15 fee split and claims 98% retention through two years.

Why it fits: retention is the hidden cost of scaling, and Howdy is built around it. The catch: four to six weeks for a full cycle, by its own account. See Howdy alternatives.

Our pick

For most growth-stage engineering teams, our pick is Ryz Labs. You get senior engineers within ±1h of US time zones who join your standups and repos from week one, chosen from the top 1% of the tens of thousands we've interviewed. Add data, product, and design people as you grow, and bring in our AI pod teams when you're ready to build AI systems.

If you want one vendor for staff augmentation, dedicated teams, and outsourcing across 100+ technologies, BairesDev.

If retention is your biggest worry, Howdy.

If you need a specialist for a few weeks, Toptal. For earlier-stage teams, see our developer staffing for startups guide.

What we'd do this week

  1. List the next three services or projects that need an owner. Hire for ownership, not tickets.
  2. Set a review budget: how many hours a week your seniors can spend onboarding. Don't add more people than that supports.
  3. Ask every vendor for real retention numbers and their replacement process.
  4. Interview the actual candidates with a senior engineer from your team in the room.

Questions

When should a growth-stage team use staff augmentation instead of hiring?

When the roadmap won't wait for a three-to-six-month hiring cycle, or when you need senior people in a market where they're hard to hire. Many teams do both.

How many augmented engineers can a team absorb?

Fewer than most roadmaps assume. Base it on how many hours a week your senior engineers can spend onboarding and reviewing, and add people only as fast as that supports.

Will augmented engineers fit our culture?

They will if they join your rituals. Engineers in your standups and code review become part of the team. Engineers who work off a ticket queue rarely do.

Can we add non-engineers the same way?

With us, yes. We place data, product, and design people as well as engineers.
