Quick note before we start: this was written by Ryz Labs, and we're one of the options below. We're biased, so we've been straight about where others beat us.
Gun.io places vetted, very senior freelance engineers on contract, contract-to-hire or full-time terms, and handles the contracts, billing and payments. People look for alternatives for a few structural reasons. There are no standard prices, so budgeting before you engage is hard. The pool is global and Gun.io makes no time-zone commitment. Its own FAQ says the platform is "mostly optimized for individual freelancers", not teams. We also didn't find written trial terms. And public reviews are thin: when we checked, Trustpilot showed 2.2/5 from 8 reviews (mostly developers) and Clutch had a single review from 2020. That's too small a sample to judge by, but it does mean less independent feedback. If you want one staff-level contractor and a path to hiring them, Gun.io can still be the right call.
If you came to Gun.io for seniority, we match that, and add guaranteed US hours. We place senior Latin American engineers inside your team (same standups, same repos, roadmap from week one), all within about an hour of US time zones. Fortune 500 engineering teams trust us, and only the top 1% of tens of thousands of interviewed engineers make it. Unlike a freelancer platform, we also run AI pod teams: dedicated pods of senior engineers that build AI systems inside your cloud and ship them. Our case studies include a marketing-compliance system that took review of 8,000+ documents from days to hours. See our vetting process for how we screen.
Where we're not the right fit: hourly gigs, engineers outside the Americas, or a contract-to-hire route where the engineer becomes your salaried employee. We also don't publish prices. Full comparison: Ryz Labs vs Gun.io.
Toptal is the most established like-for-like swap. It says fewer than 3% of 200,000+ yearly applicants are accepted, average time to match is under 24 hours, and it offers a trial of up to two weeks where you won't be billed if you're not satisfied. It also has far more public reviews (4.8/5 on Clutch from 53 reviews when we checked). The catch: Clutch lists a $100-$149/hr band, and time-zone overlap depends on the freelancer.
If Gun.io's lack of standard prices is the problem, Arc publishes freelance rates ($15-$110+ an hour), and its full-time placement fee (20% of salary) is the same as Gun.io's. It offers a risk-free trial of up to two weeks on freelance hires. The catch: a global pool, so check time zones per person.
Lemon.io says it matches in about 24 hours, with no minimum on hours or duration, and that only 1% of applicants make it through a senior-engineer interview. Its terms spell out a 4-week trial for direct hires and a 60-day replacement guarantee, which is more written detail than Gun.io offers. The catch: overlap with New York depends on the developer, and you manage the work yourself.
If the reason you like Gun.io is the route to full-time, Terminal goes further: it acts as employer of record, handling payroll, benefits and HR in nine markets. It also offers contract and contract-to-hire, with a 14-day risk-free guarantee on contract engagements. The catch: its FAQ says full-time placements take about 45 days, and four of its markets are in Europe.
Stay if you want a very senior individual: Gun.io says 70% of its currently engaged developers have 10+ years of experience. Stay if you want a contract-to-hire path with a published 20% placement fee, or if you like seeing each developer's full price on their profile with no added fees. Stay if you need someone outside the Americas, since Gun.io handles payroll and compliance across 100+ countries. Gun.io also says the average client hires within 13 days, which is quick for senior talent.
Consider switching if you need guaranteed New York hours, written trial terms, or a team rather than one person. Our guides to staff augmentation for senior engineers and developer staffing for startups compare more options.
Arc publishes freelance rates ($15-$110+/hr) and Toptal publishes its $79 monthly matching fee. Gun.io shows prices per developer profile. Everyone else quotes per role.
Toptal and Arc offer trials of up to two weeks, Lemon.io has a 4-week trial for direct hires, and Terminal has a 14-day guarantee on contractors.
Ryz Labs places Latin American engineers within an hour of US time zones. Terminal's Canada and LatAm markets overlap closely too. The others are global, so check each person.
Yes. We place senior Python developers and data engineers who work New York hours. If that's what you need, talk to us.
