Full disclosure: we're Ryz Labs, and we're on this list. So yes, we're biased. Here's what we'd actually tell a friend, including when you should hire someone else.
Chicago has an unusually deep bench of home-grown software consultancies, several of them founded here. The deciding question is whether you want a local consultancy to own a project, or senior engineers to join the team you already have. Local firms are strong at the first. Remote teams, like ours, are built for the second.
Chicago's buyers are heavy on trading and financial services, insurance, logistics, manufacturing and healthcare. A lot of the software is old and important: mainframe-adjacent insurance systems, order management for distributors, risk platforms at trading firms. So modernization skill matters more here than greenfield app design.
Chicago sits on Central time. That makes Latin America an easy fit: Colombia, Peru and much of Mexico share Central time or sit one hour off it for most of the year. It also means you're an hour behind New York vendors and two ahead of West Coast ones, which matters for standups and incident response.
And Chicago has a real local market of consultancies. Several firms on this list were founded or are headquartered here, which gives you more in-person options than most cities outside the coasts.
8th Light says it has built custom software "Since 2006," and now leads with "We ship AI." It says it is headquartered in Chicago with 140+ team members.
Why it fits: a local firm with a long software craftsmanship history, now doing AI work too. The catch: it's a project consultancy, so it fits best when you hand over a scoped build.
We provide senior Latin American engineers who work on your team: your standups, your repos, your roadmap, on Chicago hours. We're trusted by Fortune 500 engineering teams, and only the top 1% of the tens of thousands of engineers we've interviewed make it. Our AI pod teams build AI systems in your cloud and ship them to production, such as the fraud-detection and driver-support agent work in our case studies.
Why we fit: if your team owns a legacy platform and needs Java, .NET or Python engineers who can work in it from week one, that's the work we do. See software development for Chicago companies and legacy application modernization.
Where we're not the right fit: we're remote, with no Chicago office, so if you want a consultancy in your building every week, pick 8th Light, SPR or West Monroe. If you need business-process consulting alongside the build, West Monroe fits better. And if you need follow-the-sun coverage in Europe or Asia, a global firm like Thoughtworks is a better match.
SPR calls itself a technology modernization firm. It offers custom software and mobile app development, cloud consulting, data and analytics, and AI consulting, and says it has joined the Claude Partner Network.
Why it fits: a Chicago-headquartered firm focused on modernizing enterprise systems. The catch: it's a consultancy model, so expect project scopes rather than individual engineers.
West Monroe describes itself as "a global consulting firm fluent in business and technology." Its technology practice covers AI, cloud, cybersecurity, data and legacy modernization. It lists a Chicago office on West Monroe Street, and also a Costa Rica office.
Why it fits: when the hard part is the operating model, not just the code. The catch: you're buying consulting, which is a different price and pace than adding engineers.
Thoughtworks was founded in Chicago in 1993 and still lists an office on East Randolph Street. It says it has 10,000+ people in 47 offices across 18 countries.
Why it fits: deep modernization experience and enterprise scale. The catch: most of its people are outside North America, per its last public filing. See Ryz Labs vs Thoughtworks.
BairesDev says it has 4,000+ engineers, mostly in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico, who "work your hours." It offers staff augmentation, dedicated teams and outsourcing.
Why it fits: a large nearshore bench on US time. The catch: pricing isn't public. See Ryz Labs vs BairesDev.
If you want a Chicago firm to build something end to end, 8th Light or SPR. Both are headquartered here.
If the change is as much about process as software, West Monroe.
If you're a large enterprise with a multi-year program, Thoughtworks.
If you have a team and need senior engineers on Central time, that's us. Our engineers join your sprint and work your hours. See also software development companies for options beyond Chicago.
Most firms here don't publish rates, so we can't compare fairly. Ask for a written quote with the team makeup, then compare cost per engineer per month.
Team size times months times monthly rate. Three senior engineers at $12,000 a month for five months is $180,000 at our rates. Add a lead if the work needs one.
Colombia, Peru and much of Mexico share Central time or sit one hour off it for most of the year. Argentina and Brazil run two to three hours ahead.
Hire a consultancy if you lack the leadership to run the work. Add engineers if you have leads and a roadmap and just need more senior hands.
We checked pricing and services for every provider here in October 2026. This changes often, so double-check before you sign anything.
