Full disclosure: we're Ryz Labs, and we're on this list. So yes, we're biased. Here's what we'd actually tell a friend, including when you should hire someone else.
Custom software firms all say they build "software shaped to your business." What actually differs is the engagement model and the hours. The question that decides it: do you want a vendor to own the whole build and hand it over, or senior engineers who work on your team, in your repos, during your workday?
Off-the-shelf software is priced and specified before you buy. Custom software isn't, so most of the risk is in the scoping and in who does the work. Two vendors can quote the same feature list and deliver very different systems, because the result depends on the engineers, not the statement of work.
That's why the model matters more than the logo. In a staff augmentation vs outsourcing decision, the real question is who makes daily technical calls: your leads or the vendor's project manager. And for anything you'll run for years, overlap with your team's working hours decides how fast reviews, fixes and decisions happen. Read fixed price vs time and materials before you sign either kind of contract.
We're trusted by Fortune 500 engineering teams. Our custom software development comes three ways: senior Latin American engineers who join your team (staff augmentation), a dedicated development team, or software outsourcing where a Ryz team owns delivery of a scoped system. Same standups, same repos, real-time overlap with US teams and same-day code review. Only the top 1% of the tens of thousands of engineers we've interviewed make it.
Pricing is public: mid-level engineers (comparable to Amazon L5) run $7,000 to $10,000 a month and seniors (comparable to Amazon L6) $10,000 to $15,000. You get a plan, a price and the names of the people before you start. And when the build needs AI, our AI pod teams have shipped production systems; see our case studies.
Where we're not the right fit: if you want a self-serve freelance marketplace or short hourly gigs, try a marketplace. If you need engineers in Europe or Asia time zones or follow-the-sun coverage, EPAM, Endava or Thoughtworks fit better.
EPAM had about 62,850 people at the end of 2025 and runs managed delivery and consulting, with AI programs built on its AI/Run playbook and DIAL platform.
Where it fits: scale and breadth. The catch: a large-firm engagement floor. See Ryz Labs vs EPAM.
Founded in 1993, Thoughtworks has 10,000+ people and has published well-known books on engineering practice. It now delivers with its AI/works platform.
Where it fits: buyers who want a consultancy to raise their own team's practices. The catch: confirm which office staffs you. See Ryz Labs vs Thoughtworks.
BairesDev offers staff augmentation, dedicated teams with its own technical PMs, and full outsourcing. It says "the software developers, architects, and QA engineers you meet in scoping are the people who build your software."
Where it fits: when you want the vendor to manage delivery. The catch: ask how much day-to-day control stays with your leads. See Ryz Labs vs BairesDev.
Endava (headcount 11,225 in March 2026) does digital transformation, core modernization and cloud, and says it now builds AI into every part of its delivery.
Where it fits: European or transatlantic programs. The catch: ask which delivery center would staff you and how many hours overlap with yours.
Founded in 1989, ScienceSoft has 750+ IT professionals and holds ISO 9001, ISO 27001 and ISO/IEC 27701 certifications. It covers custom software, AI, data, QA and security.
Where it fits: procurement that values certifications and history. The catch: confirm team location and hours.
Intellectsoft offers custom software, mobile, AI and dedicated teams across fintech, healthcare, logistics and more.
Where it fits: buyers who want a New York office with distributed delivery. The catch: ask which region your team comes from.
If you want senior engineers your leads direct, on US hours: Ryz Labs. Published rates, named people before you start, and the option to add an AI pod later.
If you want a vendor to own a large program: EPAM or Thoughtworks.
If you want vendor-managed delivery from Latin America: BairesDev.
If certifications drive your procurement: ScienceSoft. More options: best software development companies and dedicated team providers.
Cost is team size times months times monthly rate. Four engineers at $11,000 a month for six months is $264,000. See the cost to hire a software developer.
Fixed price suits small, stable scopes. Time and materials suits anything that will change, which is most software.
Nearshore gives you working-hour overlap. Offshore can cost less but shifts reviews to the next day. See nearshore vs offshore.
You should, in your own repos from day one. Get it in the contract.
We checked pricing and services for every provider here in October 2026. This changes often, so double-check before you sign anything.
