Ryz Labs vs Upwork

The world's biggest open freelance marketplace, versus senior Latin American engineers embedded in your team on US hours.

We'll say this up front: Ryz Labs wrote this page, and we're one of the companies on it. When another option is the better call, we say so plainly.

The short answer

These are different tools. Choose Upwork if you want to post a job today, pick a freelancer yourself, and pay a published fee for scoped or short work you'll manage directly. Choose Ryz Labs if you want senior Latin American engineers working inside your team on US hours for the long run, or an AI pod team that builds AI systems inside your stack. We're trusted by Fortune 500 engineering teams, and only the top 1% make it through our vetting.

Where Upwork is better

Price and transparency. Upwork publishes its client fees: a 5% marketplace fee on Basic (3% for eligible US clients paying by checking account) plus a small contract initiation fee, or 10% on Business Plus, which Upwork says has no subscription fee. Its own hiring guide says software developer rates on Upwork range from $10 to $100 an hour, with experts at $150 or more. Nobody on the managed side of this market is that open about money, including us.

Self-serve speed. You can post a job and start reviewing proposals the same day. Business Plus promises an AI shortlist in under 6 hours. For a landing page, a bug fix or a one-off integration, that's the right tool, and we'd tell you to use it.

Range. Upwork says it has 18M+ freelancers across 180 countries, covering almost every skill and time zone. If you need something niche, or someone in Asia or Europe, the pool is huge.

Payment protection. Escrow, built-in time tracking and dispute support come on every plan. For large companies, Upwork's Lifted business adds staff augmentation and employer-of-record services.

Where Ryz is better

Vetting is done before you see anyone. On Upwork's Basic plan, technical screening is your job: Upwork's own guide tells you to review proposals, GitHub and portfolios yourself. We do that work up front. Recruiters source, our in-house ARC system ranks the pipeline, and every candidate goes through a structured NTRVSTA AI interview, with recruiter review before and after. AI scores are advisory; people decide. Only the top 1% make it, and you run the final interview from a short, curated list. See our vetting process.

Team members on US hours. Our engineers work within about an hour of US time zones and join your standups, repos and roadmap from week one. On a marketplace, availability, hours and continuity depend on each freelancer, and if you hire five, coordinating them is on you.

Continuity for long-term work. Upwork's marketplace has no delivery lead or replacement guarantee, so if a freelancer moves on, you start the search again. Our engineers are senior people who join your team for the long run, not for a gig. You sign one contract with Ryz, our engineers work with us as independent contractors, and we handle paying them.

AI pod teams. We run dedicated pods of senior engineers (often about 7 people, including a tech lead, an ML engineer and backend engineers) that build AI systems inside your cloud and repos and ship them to production. Our case studies include fraud detection that confirmed $5.94M in fraud for a global fleet company and an AI voice platform with 1M+ outbound calls. That's not something you assemble from individual gigs.

Pricing

Upwork's client fees are published. On Basic, you pay a 5% marketplace fee (3% for eligible US clients paying by checking account) plus a one-time contract initiation fee of $0.99 to $14.99. On Business Plus, the fee is 10% (8% with the same checking discount), with no contract initiation fee except up to $4.99 on small fixed-price contracts, and $49 a month per active Direct Contract. On top of that, you pay whatever rate the freelancer sets. Lifted's enterprise pricing isn't published.

Our pricing is a custom quote, scoped per team. You get a scoped plan, a price, and the names of the people who would do the work. For a small, scoped task, Upwork will almost always cost less. For a senior engineer who'll own part of your system for years, compare the total cost, including the time you'd spend screening and managing.

Questions

How much does Upwork charge clients?

A 5% marketplace fee on Basic (3% for eligible US clients paying by checking account) plus a contract initiation fee, or 10% on Business Plus. You also pay the freelancer's rate.

Does Upwork vet developers?

Upwork verifies every freelancer's identity and location. Its Expert-Vetted filter on Business Plus covers what Upwork calls the top 1%, screened for technical and soft skills. Otherwise, you screen candidates yourself.

Can I build a full engineering team on Upwork?

You can hire several freelancers, but you assemble and coordinate them yourself. For a managed program, Upwork points large companies to Lifted. For a pod that builds together inside your stack, that's what our AI pod teams do.

When does Ryz Labs make more sense than Upwork?

When the work is ongoing, touches core systems, and needs someone in your standups on US hours every day. If that's you, talk to us.
