AI development cost calculator: what a senior AI pod costs
Choose the team shape and timeline for your AI build and see the monthly and total cost at our published rates, with the arithmetic shown.
By the Ryz Labs team · Updated October 2026
What it costs to build an AI system mostly comes down to three numbers: how many people, how senior, and for how long. Project cost = team size × duration × monthly rate. Ryz Labs typically charges $7,000 to $10,000 a month for a mid-level engineer, $10,000 to $15,000 for a senior engineer, and from $15,000 for a lead, quoted per team. Use the calculator to price an AI pod for your build, then talk to us for a scoped plan with names.

Excludes your cloud and model API usage, which your providers bill directly. Ranges use Ryz's typical rates; your quote is scoped per team, with a plan, a price and the names of the people before you start.
What drives the cost of an AI build
The team is most of the cost, and the team follows from the work. A few things move it more than anything else:
- Data readiness. If the data the system needs is scattered, unlabeled or locked in legacy systems, a data engineer spends real time on pipelines before any model work pays off.
- Integrations. An assistant that answers questions is smaller than an agent that reads from and writes to your CRM, ticketing and core systems with approvals in between.
- Evaluation and controls. Production AI needs evaluation sets, guardrails, monitoring and human review where the stakes are high. Regulated work adds review cycles with your compliance and security teams.
- How far you take it. A pilot that proves value on one workflow needs a smaller team than a system rolled out across business units with SLAs.
Typical pod shapes
A standard Ryz AI pod is about seven senior engineers, including a tech lead, ML engineers and backend engineers, sized to the job. Some builds start smaller: in one of our case studies, a pod grew from zero to three engineers to build a marketing compliance system for a global capital management firm, reviewing 8,000+ materials a year. The presets above use these shapes; adjust them to match your plan.
A worked example: a seven-person pod (one lead and six senior engineers) for six months is 6 × $10,000 to $15,000 plus one lead from $15,000, per month, times six months: $450,000 to $630,000 and up, depending on the lead quote.
What isn't in the number
The calculator prices the team. Your cloud infrastructure, model API usage, third-party licenses and your own team's time are separate. Model and cloud spend depends on your traffic and design choices, so we estimate it with you during scoping rather than guess here.
How to use the estimate
- Price the pilot first. A small pod on one high-value workflow tells you more than a big plan on paper.
- Compare the total against the alternatives you are weighing: hiring in-house, a systems integrator, or licensing a platform. Our guide to custom software vs SaaS vs a systems integrator covers the trade-offs.
- Bring the shape to a scoping call. You get a plan, a price and the names of the engineers before anything starts.

FAQ
How much does AI development cost?
For a team-built system, cost is team size × duration × monthly rate. At Ryz's typical rates, a three-person pilot pod runs about $35,000 to $45,000 and up per month, and a seven-person pod about $75,000 to $105,000 and up per month, with lead quotes setting the top of the range. Cloud and model usage are billed separately by your providers.
How much does it cost to build an AI agent?
It depends on what the agent touches. An agent that drafts answers from your documents needs a smaller team than one that takes actions in your systems with approvals, audit trails and evaluation. Price the team shape in the calculator, then scope the integrations with us.
Why price a team instead of a fixed project?
AI work changes as you learn from evaluation results. Pricing the team keeps you in control of priorities, and you can grow, shrink or end the pod as the work evolves, instead of paying for change requests.
Are cloud and model costs included?
No. Your cloud provider and model providers bill those directly, and they depend on traffic and design. We estimate them with you during scoping.
What do I get before I commit?
A scoped plan, a price and the names of the engineers who would do the work. Our engineers work on US business hours, on your team, in your cloud and repos.
