Full disclosure: we're Ryz Labs, and we're on this list. So yes, we're biased. Here's what we'd actually tell a friend, including when you should hire someone else.
Los Angeles has a lot of app studios and fewer large engineering firms than New York or San Francisco. The deciding question is whether you need a studio to design and launch a product, or senior engineers to grow the team you already have. LA studios are good at the first. Remote and nearshore teams, like ours, are built for the second.
LA's software buyers are a mix you don't see elsewhere: studios and streaming, entertainment-adjacent consumer apps, aerospace and defense suppliers, ports and logistics, and a large healthcare and biotech cluster in Orange County. Media companies care about video pipelines and peak traffic on release nights. Health companies care about HIPAA and EHR integration. Same city, very different partners.
Time zones work differently here, too. Latin America is three to five hours ahead of Pacific time. A nearshore engineer can absolutely cover your 9-to-5, but that's their late afternoon and evening. Ask any nearshore vendor, us included, exactly which hours the team will work and confirm it in writing.
And LA is sprawling. A local partner in Venice is still an hour from a client in Burbank on a bad day, so "local" often means video calls anyway.
Rootstrap says it has developed custom software "Since 2011." It lists AI (generative AI, custom LLMs, ML, computer vision), data and cloud work, and React, Python, Node.js and Ruby on Rails. It says it builds with Anthropic's Claude and OpenAI.
Why it fits: an LA hub plus Latin American delivery is a sensible mix for this city. The catch: it's a product-build firm, so it suits a scoped product more than single engineers on your team.
We provide senior Latin American engineers who work on your team: your standups, your repos, your roadmap, on LA hours. We're trusted by Fortune 500 engineering teams, and only the top 1% of the tens of thousands of engineers we've interviewed make it. Our AI pod teams build AI systems in your cloud and ship them to production. Our case studies include an AI voice platform and an AI real-estate agent.
Why we fit: if you already have an engineering lead and need senior React, Node.js, Python or mobile engineers who can own work from week one, that's our core job. See software development for Los Angeles companies and hire React developers.
Where we're not the right fit: we're remote, with no LA office, and our engineers working Pacific hours are working late in their own day. If you want an in-person studio, pick Dogtown Media or Rootstrap. If you want a design-led app launch from one shop, a studio fits better. And if you need Asia-Pacific overlap for a team in Seoul or Sydney, a global firm is the better match.
Dogtown Media builds custom mobile apps and lists healthcare work including HIPAA-compliant app development, clinical trial apps, medical device apps and remote patient monitoring. It says it is "headquartered in Venice Beach, California."
Why it fits: a local studio with a clear healthcare-app specialty. The catch: it's mobile-first, so a large backend or data platform is a different kind of job.
Topflight builds healthcare apps, including telehealth and remote patient monitoring, and lists EHR integration with Epic, Cerner and Athena plus HL7/FHIR.
Why it fits: Orange County's health and biotech companies get a partner a short drive away. The catch: it's healthcare-focused, so it's not the pick for media or retail. See our healthcare software development companies guide.
West Monroe calls itself "a global consulting firm fluent in business and technology" and lists a downtown Los Angeles office on South Flower Street. Its technology practice covers AI, cloud, cybersecurity, data and modernization.
Why it fits: when you need operating-model and process help with the software. The catch: consulting rates and pace, not engineering capacity.
8th Light has built custom software since 2006 and now leads with "We ship AI." It lists Los Angeles as a satellite location and says it has 140+ team members.
Why it fits: experienced consultancy with some LA presence. The catch: its headquarters is in Chicago, so ask who would be local.
BairesDev says it has 4,000+ engineers, mostly in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico, who "work your hours."
Why it fits: the biggest nearshore bench here. The catch: pricing isn't public. See Ryz Labs vs BairesDev.
If you want a product team with someone in LA, Rootstrap.
If you're launching a mobile or patient-facing app, Dogtown Media, or Topflight Apps if you're in Orange County health tech.
If the project is as much business change as software, West Monroe.
If you have a team and need senior engineers on Pacific hours, that's us. Our engineers join your sprint and ship on your roadmap.
Yes, but it's their afternoon and evening. Colombia and Peru are three hours ahead of Pacific for much of the year. Argentina and Brazil are four to five. Confirm hours in writing.
No firm here publishes rates. Estimate team size times months times monthly rate. Two senior engineers at $12,000 a month for six months is $144,000 at our rates.
Pick a studio for design-led launches and frequent in-person work. Pick a remote team when you have leads and need more engineering hours.
Media and streaming, consumer apps, health and biotech, logistics and aerospace suppliers are the big groups. Each needs different experience, so ask for a reference in yours.
We checked pricing and services for every provider here in October 2026. This changes often, so double-check before you sign anything.
