Full disclosure: we're Ryz Labs, and we're on this list. So yes, we're biased. Here's what we'd actually tell a friend, including when you should hire someone else. Every fact about Andela and the other firms comes from what they publish, with sources at the end.
Andela's strength is reach: a global network across Africa, Latin America, Europe and India. So the question that decides your shortlist is about the clock. Do you need engineers spread across many time zones, or engineers who share your team's working day? If reach matters most, Andela and Toptal lead. If same-day review with a US team matters most, look at firms that staff for US hours.
Andela started in 2014, went fully remote in 2020, and now calls itself "the human layer powering production AI". It says it has 17,000 certified AI-native engineers and has trained 200,000+ technologists. Wikipedia puts about 60% of its network in Africa and Latin America. Its site now sells an agentic engineering assessment, training curriculums, managed AI builds and partner offerings for GitHub, Anthropic and OpenAI.
That breadth is the reason to choose Andela, and also the thing to check. A Brazil-based sample profile on its site shows four hours of overlap. Africa-based engineers sit roughly GMT to GMT+3. For a follow-the-sun support team, that spread is useful. For a product team that reviews pull requests the same afternoon, it is worth asking about before you start.
The second question is the unit you buy. Andela, Toptal and Turing match individuals from a network. BairesDev and EPAM staff teams from their own delivery centers. We put named senior engineers on your team.
Ryz engineers work on your team, reporting to your leads, in US business hours, so review happens the same day. You meet each engineer by name before the engagement starts. They join your repos, standups and roadmap from week one, and most ship code in their first week. When the work is AI, we put together an AI pod team that builds in your cloud with the tools you already use.
Mid-level engineers run $7,000 to $10,000 a month and senior engineers $10,000 to $15,000. Leads are quoted per team. Only the top 1% of the tens of thousands of engineers we interview make it. We'll sign your NDA before we share profiles, and you own all code and IP. A team can start in under two weeks once you say go. See our vetting process.
Where we're not the right fit: if you need engineers in Europe, Africa or Asia time zones, or follow-the-sun coverage, Andela's reach is the better fit. If you want a self-serve marketplace or an hourly gig, Toptal suits that better. See Ryz Labs vs Andela.
Toptal is a global network of vetted freelancers, founded in 2010, covering developers, designers, finance experts and product managers. It says average time to match is under 24 hours, and each new engagement starts with a trial period where you are not charged if you are not satisfied.
Where Toptal beats us: speed for one person, and skills outside engineering. The catch: you manage each freelancer yourself. See Andela vs Toptal.
Turing is a San Francisco AI company best known for supplying training data and evaluations to frontier AI labs. Its enterprise line, Turing Intelligence, is offered as Advise, Augment and Build, and it says it has a network of 4M+ engineers and experts.
Where Turing beats us: depth in fine-tuning, evaluation and post-training. The catch: delivery comes from a distributed network, so overlap depends on who is staffed. See Andela vs Turing.
BairesDev says it has 4,000+ engineers across 100+ technologies, mostly in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico, and that its engineers work your hours with full overlap. It sells staff augmentation, dedicated teams with its own PMs, and outsourced projects.
Where BairesDev beats us: breadth of stacks and the option of vendor-led teams. The catch: it does not publish rates, and AI is one of many technologies it covers. See Andela vs BairesDev.
EPAM is an S&P 500 engineering firm with about 62,850 people and $5.457 billion in 2025 revenue. It sells managed delivery teams alongside its AI/Run offerings and the open-source DIAL platform.
Where EPAM beats us: if you want one vendor to run a large program across Europe, Asia and the Americas, it is built for that. The catch: it sells programs more than individual engineers.
If your team is in the US and wants same-day review from named senior engineers: Ryz Labs.
If you need one specialist next week: Toptal.
If the work is fine-tuning or model evaluation: Turing.
If you need many engineers across many stacks in Latin America: BairesDev.
If you need coverage across Africa, Europe and the Americas, or want to train your own engineers on agentic tools: stay with Andela. That is exactly what it is built for.
For freelancers and individual matches, Toptal and Turing. For nearshore teams on US hours, BairesDev and Ryz Labs. For large global programs, EPAM. Our Andela alternatives page covers more options.
No. Its pricing page asks you to book a discovery call. A sample profile on its site showed a monthly range for one role, which is illustrative only. Our Andela pricing page collects what is public.
Enough to hold standup and review code the same day. Try our time-zone overlap calculator with your team's hours and the cities a vendor proposes.
A marketplace is great for a specialist. A system that has to run in production usually needs a team with a tech lead who owns it. Our list of companies to hire AI engineers compares both.
