Disclosure: we're Ryz Labs, and we compete with some of the companies on this page. Here's why we think we're the right call for most engineering teams, with a source for every fact about the others.
Freelancer.com calls itself the world's largest freelancing and crowdsourcing marketplace by number of users and projects. Its parent, Freelancer Limited, is listed in Australia (ASX: FLN) and has its registered office in Sydney. Employers post a project or a contest and freelancers bid. The company says more than 85 million registered users have posted over 25 million projects and contests, and that in 2025 the average project size was US$413. Employer fees are published: 3% or $3.00 (whichever is greater) on fixed-price projects, and 3% of each hourly payment, with optional paid upgrades. A blue "Verified" badge is available, and the employer does the technical screening. That's a good fit for small, bounded jobs. Teams look for an alternative when they need a developer for months, working in their repos and standups, screened before they meet them, on hours that match their own. For that, our pick is Ryz Labs. Here's how the field compares.
Here is every public price signal we found, checked October 2026. Most firms in this market don't publish a rate card, so we show the hourly band on their Clutch listing and convert it to a monthly figure for one full-time engineer.
Monthly figures are our math at 160 hours a month. Directory bands are entered by the firms themselves and are not quotes, so ask each vendor for a written monthly price for the same roles at the same seniority.
If you're hiring developers for work that matters to your product, we're the best alternative to Freelancer.com. Our senior engineers work on your team, reporting to your leads. They join your standups, your repos and your roadmap from week one, on US business hours, so review and pairing happen the same day. Fortune 500 engineering teams trust us for exactly this, in every industry.
There's no bidding round to sort through. We've interviewed tens of thousands of engineers, and only the top 1% make it. Recruiters source candidates, our in-house ARC system ranks the pipeline, every candidate goes through a structured NTRVSTA AI interview, and recruiters review each one before and after. AI scores are advisory; people decide. You meet a short list of people who fit your roles. Our vetting process page shows every step.
When you need AI built, our AI pod teams are dedicated pods of senior engineers (often around seven, with a tech lead and an ML engineer) that build in your cloud and repos, with weekly demos. Their work runs in production: fraud detection that has scored 244K+ invoices in under 30 seconds each, an AI voice platform with 1M+ outbound calls, and a compliance system that took review of 8,000+ documents from days to hours. See our case studies.
You own all the code and IP our engineers produce, and you control their access to your repos and cloud. Before you sign, you get a scoped plan, a price, and the names of the people who would do the work.
Upwork works much like Freelancer.com: post a job, review proposals, hire and manage the person yourself. Its FY2025 10-K lists a 5% client fee on Basic (3% by ACH for eligible clients) and 10% on Business Plus, which adds an Expert-Vetted filter. Its terms say users, "not Upwork," evaluate freelancers. See Ryz Labs vs Upwork.
Toptal screens before you meet anyone. It says it accepts fewer than 3% of 200,000+ yearly applicants, introduces candidates within 24 hours in almost all cases, and starts each engagement with a trial of up to two weeks. Its FAQ lists a $79 monthly subscription once you proceed with matching. You still hire and manage individuals.
Arc publishes its freelance range, charges 20% of annual salary for a full-time hire, offers a trial of up to two weeks for freelancers, and says "Hire in 72 hours." Candidates are pre-vetted, and you interview and manage each person.
Lemon.io matches startups with pre-screened freelance and full-time developers. It says matching takes about 24 hours and that there's no minimum on hours or duration. Its terms describe it as a platform that does not supervise the developers' work, and it matches individuals rather than teams.
If the work is ongoing, touches core systems and needs someone in your standups every day, or you want an AI system built and shipped, talk to us. See also our Upwork alternatives, Fiverr alternatives and our guide to staff augmentation for senior engineers.
For another bidding-style marketplace, Upwork. For developers on ongoing product work, we'd pick Ryz Labs: top 1% senior engineers, vetted before you meet them, working on your team on US hours, with the names of your engineers before you sign.
Its fees page lists 3% or $3.00 USD (whichever is greater) when you award a fixed-price project, and 3% of each payment on hourly projects. Upgrades such as Featured, NDA or Full Time listings cost extra, and the page shows two different price lists for some of them, so check before you buy.
Freelancer Limited is a public company listed on the Australian Securities Exchange, and it publishes its fees and user numbers in market announcements. What it doesn't do is vet developers for you on a standard project. The employer reviews bids and samples, and a "Verified" badge is optional.
Yes. Our engineers join your team together, and our AI pod teams are dedicated pods of senior engineers that build in your stack. See our guide to developer staffing for startups.
We checked every provider on this page in October 2026. Fees and plans change often, so confirm them before you post a project.
