Time zone overlap calculator for remote engineering teams
Pick your office, pick where the engineers are, and see how many working hours you actually share on any date, daylight saving included.
By the Ryz Labs team · Updated October 2026
Shared working hours decide how a remote engineering team feels day to day: whether a question gets answered before lunch, whether code review happens the same day, and whether standup includes everyone. Use the calculator below to see the real overlap between your office and any engineering location on a specific date. It uses your browser's time zone database, so daylight saving changes are handled for you.
Hours on the bar are in your office's local time.
How to read the result
The number is the time both teams are inside their normal working hours on the date you picked. The bar shows your office's day hour by hour: grey is your team alone, light purple is the engineers alone, and solid purple is time you share. As a rough guide:
- 6+ shared hours: one team in practice. Standups, pairing, incident response and same-day code review all happen in real time.
- 4 to 6 hours: strong. Most collaboration is live, with a short async tail at one end of the day.
- 2 to 4 hours: limited. Meetings get packed into a narrow window, and many questions wait until tomorrow.
- Under 2 hours: mostly async. Work runs on written handoffs, which suits well-specified tasks but slows design discussions and debugging.
Why shared hours matter more than the time difference
The time difference tells you how far apart two clocks are. Shared hours tell you how much of the workday people can actually talk. A team six hours ahead that starts early and a US team that starts at 8am can still share a couple of hours; a team eleven hours ahead shares almost none unless someone works nights. That's why two locations with similar rates can feel very different to work with.
Shared hours show up in delivery speed. When a pull request opened at 3pm gets reviewed at 3:30pm, it merges today. When it waits for the other side of the world to wake up, every round of feedback costs a day. Multiply that by every question, review and deploy, and the calendar shifts.
Daylight saving changes the answer twice a year
The US, Canada and Europe move their clocks on different dates, and most of Latin America and Asia don't move them at all. Chile changes on its own Southern Hemisphere schedule. So the overlap between, say, New York and São Paulo is one hour different in July than in January. Pick dates on both sides of the switch in the calculator to see it.
Getting the most out of the hours you share
- Protect the shared window. Keep standups, design reviews and pairing inside it, and push focus work outside it.
- Agree on review turnaround. "Reviewed within the shared window" is a simple, measurable rule.
- Write things down anyway. Even with full overlap, short design notes and clear tickets save meetings.
- Shift hours deliberately. An engineer starting an hour earlier or later can add an hour of overlap. Make that an explicit agreement, not an expectation.
Where Ryz fits
Ryz Labs provides senior engineers and AI pod teams that work on US business hours, including New York hours, so code review happens the same day and your standup includes everyone. Most of our engineers are based in Latin America, which is why the overlap is real rather than a night shift. Typical cost is $7,000 to $15,000 per engineer per month, scoped per team. See staff augmentation, AI pod teams, nearshore software development or hiring LatAm developers, and model your team in the talent cost calculator.
FAQ
How many hours of overlap does a remote engineering team need?
For day-to-day collaboration, four or more shared hours works well, and six or more feels like one team. Under two hours pushes the team toward async handoffs, which suits well-scoped tasks but slows debugging and design work.
Which countries have the most overlap with US time zones?
Latin America has the most. Mexico and Central America are on US Central time or close to it, Colombia, Peru and Ecuador sit on US Eastern or Central depending on the season, and Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil are one to two hours ahead of New York. Use the calculator to check a specific city and date.
Does daylight saving time change the overlap?
Yes. The US and Europe switch on different dates, and most Latin American and Asian countries don't switch at all, so the gap between two cities can change by an hour during the year. The calculator uses the date you pick to account for it.
Does the calculator store anything?
No. It runs entirely in your browser and doesn't send or save your selections.
What hours do Ryz engineers work?
Ryz engineers work on US business hours, including New York hours, so they join your standups and review code the same day.
