Forward deployed engineer salary and cost: 2026 benchmarks
What forward deployed engineers earn in the US according to Levels.fyi and Glassdoor, what an in-house FDE really costs you, and how that compares with a Ryz forward-deployed team.
By the Ryz Labs team · Updated October 2026
As of October 2026, Levels.fyi reports a median total compensation of $216,250 a year for forward deployed engineers in the United States, with the middle half of reported packages between $178,750 and $292,000. Glassdoor's estimate, which weights base pay more heavily, is an average of $156,088. That is the salary side only. Hiring an FDE in-house also means recruiting time, benefits, employer taxes and equity. A senior engineer on a Ryz forward-deployed team is typically $10,000 to $15,000 a month, quoted per team.
Forward deployed engineer salary benchmarks
Salary data for this role is noisier than for most engineering titles. The title is new at many companies, it covers everything from post-sale implementation engineers to senior AI builders, and a handful of AI labs pay far above the rest of the market. Here is what the main public sources report, with their methods, so you can pick the number that fits your situation.
| Source | What it measures | US figure reported | Range reported |
|---|
| Levels.fyi, forward deployed engineer, United States | Self-reported total compensation: base plus annualized stock plus bonus (154 submissions as of October 2026) | Median $216,250 | 25th percentile $178,750, 75th $292,000, 90th $361,000 |
| Glassdoor, forward deployed engineer, United States | Total pay estimate from anonymous salary reports (652 reports) | Average $156,088 | 25th percentile $124,805, 75th $198,276 |
| ZipRecruiter, forward deployed engineer, United States | Pay estimate built mostly from job postings (as of August 2026) | Average $116,463 | Not used here; see source |
Why the spread? Levels.fyi skews toward large technology companies and AI labs, where stock is a big part of pay. Glassdoor and ZipRecruiter include more implementation and support-engineering roles that carry the FDE title. For a senior FDE who can own an AI system in production, the Levels.fyi range is the more realistic benchmark. These figures change frequently, so check the live pages before you build a budget around them.
What drives FDE pay up or down
- Employer. AI labs and well-funded AI companies compete hard for FDEs and pay accordingly. Enterprise software vendors and services firms generally pay less.
- Seniority and scope. An engineer who can lead a deployment end to end, including discovery with business users and the security review, earns far more than one who executes tasks within someone else's design.
- AI experience. Production experience with retrieval, agents, evaluation and model APIs is the scarce part of the profile right now.
- Location and travel. Postings in San Francisco and New York pay the most. Many FDE roles also require regular customer travel, which narrows the candidate pool further.
What an in-house FDE actually costs you
Salary is the number candidates see. Your cost is higher. When you hire a forward deployed engineer directly, budget for each of these:
- Total compensation. Base, bonus and equity, using the benchmarks above. At the Levels.fyi median, that is about $18,000 a month before anything else.
- Benefits and employer taxes. Health coverage, retirement contributions, and the employer share of taxes, which vary by state and plan.
- Recruiting. Either agency fees or the internal recruiter time and interview hours it takes to find a scarce profile. Count your senior engineers' interview time, which comes straight off the roadmap.
- Time to hire. The months the seat sits empty are months the AI pilot stays a pilot. This is often the largest cost and the one that never shows up in the budget.
- Ramp-up. A new hire needs time to learn your data, platforms and approval processes before shipping.
- Team shape. One FDE rarely gets an AI system to production alone. Most deployments need a lead, backend engineers, someone strong on data and someone strong on models and evaluation. Multiply accordingly.
- Retention. Experienced FDEs are heavily recruited. If one leaves mid-project, you pay the recruiting and ramp costs again.
None of this means hiring in-house is wrong. If the system you are building is core to your business for years, you will want your own team to own it. The question is whether you want to wait to build that team before the first system ships, or get it into production first and grow internal ownership alongside it.
FDE options compared
| Option | How cost works | What you get | Trade-offs |
|---|
| Hire FDEs in-house | Total compensation per the benchmarks above, plus benefits, taxes, recruiting and ramp | Long-term ownership and institutional knowledge | Slowest to start; you need several hires for a full team |
| Your AI vendor's FDEs | Usually bundled with a large platform or model commitment | Experts in that vendor's product | Their job is to make that product succeed; architecture choices follow the vendor |
| Freelance or marketplace engineers | Hourly or monthly rates set per engineer | Fast access to individuals | You do the vetting and team-building; continuity varies |
| Consulting firm | Project fees, often with a separate build phase | Assessment, roadmap, program management | The output of the first phase is usually advice, not running software |
| Ryz forward-deployed team | $7,000 to $15,000 per engineer per month by seniority, quoted per team | A dedicated AI pod of senior engineers on your team, in your cloud and repos | Not a strategy engagement or a licensed platform; US business hours, not follow-the-sun coverage |

What forward deployed engineers cost at Ryz
Our forward deployed engineers work as AI pod teams, and we publish our rates:
- Mid-level engineers (comparable to Amazon L5 / SDE II): $7,000 to $10,000 per month.
- Senior engineers (comparable to Amazon L6): $10,000 to $15,000 per month.
- Tech leads: $15,000 and up per month, quoted per team.
Project cost is team size times duration times monthly rate. A pod of seven engineers, mostly senior, at $10,000 to $15,000 each comes to roughly $70,000 to $105,000 a month, with the lead role quoted on top. Six months of that pod is a number you can put in a budget the week you start talking to us, and you get a scoped plan, a price and the names of the people who would do the work before anything starts. See rates by role, or model your team in the talent cost calculator and the AI development cost calculator.
Price is only half of it. What you are buying is time to production. Our pods join your repos, CI and standups, work on US business hours including New York hours, and run weekly demos of working software. Every engineer comes through a vetting process that only the top 1% of candidates pass. You own all the code and IP they produce.

How to budget for forward-deployed work
- Start from the system, not the headcount. Write down the workflow you want changed, the data it needs, the systems it touches and how you will measure success.
- Size the team to the integrations. Data access and legacy integrations usually take more engineering than the model work. Budget backend and data engineers accordingly.
- Budget the first production release separately from the run phase. After launch, the team can often shrink, or your own engineers take over.
- Include model and cloud costs. Inference, vector storage and logging run in your accounts, under your own provider agreements, and grow with usage.
- Plan the handover. Decide early whether you will keep the pod on the next problem, add your own engineers, or take the system fully in-house.

FAQ
How much does a forward deployed engineer make?
Levels.fyi reports a US median total compensation of $216,250 for forward deployed engineers as of October 2026, with the middle half between $178,750 and $292,000. Glassdoor's US average is $156,088. Top AI labs pay above these ranges.
Why do FDE salary figures differ so much between sources?
The sources measure different things. Levels.fyi collects total compensation including stock, mostly from technology companies. Glassdoor and ZipRecruiter include more implementation roles and lean on base pay or job postings.
What does it cost to hire forward deployed engineers through Ryz?
Typically $7,000 to $10,000 a month for mid-level engineers and $10,000 to $15,000 for senior engineers, with leads at $15,000 and up, quoted per team. You see the plan, the price and the names of the engineers before you start.
Should we hire FDEs in-house or bring in a team?
Compare total cost, not salary: benefits, employer taxes, recruiting and the months a seat sits empty all count. In-house makes sense once the system is core and stable and you want your own team to own it long term; a team gets the first system into production sooner.
How many forward deployed engineers does a project need?
It depends on the system and its integrations. Our AI pods are usually around seven senior engineers, including a tech lead, an ML engineer and backend engineers, and can grow or shrink as the work changes.
