Mexico is the closest major tech market to the US, and that shows up in how its engineers work. Many have spent years on teams led from the US, inside US companies' engineering offices or with US clients, so sprint rituals, on-call rotations and English-language design docs are familiar ground.
Time zone. Mexico ended daylight saving time for most of the country in 2022. Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey now stay on UTC-6 all year, which matches US Central Standard Time. They are one hour behind New York in the US winter and two hours behind during US daylight time, while lining up with Chicago in winter and with Denver in summer. A few exceptions exist: Quintana Roo, home to Cancún, stays on UTC-5, and some northern border municipalities still change clocks with the US.
Tech hubs. Guadalajara is often called Mexico's Silicon Valley, with a long history in electronics manufacturing and a large software community. Mexico City has the biggest concentration of startups, fintech companies and corporate engineering teams. Monterrey has a strong industrial and enterprise software base. Querétaro, Mérida and Puebla have growing communities too.
Universities. Engineers often come from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN), the Tecnológico de Monterrey, the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM) and the Universidad de Guadalajara.
Common strengths. Mexican engineers are well represented in Java and .NET enterprise systems, Node.js and React, mobile, QA automation, cloud and DevOps, and increasingly in data and AI. Experience with US enterprise environments, including regulated industries and large legacy systems, is common.
English. Close ties with the US mean many senior engineers work in English every day. We still test spoken and written English in vetting, since a good standup update and a clear pull request description both matter.
