Definition: Infrastructure as code (IaC) is the practice of defining servers, networks, databases and other cloud resources in version-controlled files, so environments are created and changed through automated, repeatable deployments instead of manual console clicks.
Engineers describe the desired infrastructure with declarative tools such as Terraform, OpenTofu, AWS CloudFormation or Azure Bicep, or with general-purpose languages through Pulumi or AWS CDK. Changes go through pull requests and review, then a pipeline plans and applies them.
IaC makes environments reproducible, reduces configuration drift between staging and production, documents what exists and speeds up recovery. Security and compliance checks can run automatically on every change.
Teams keep state files secure, split code into reusable modules, run IaC through CI/CD and scan for misconfigurations before applying. AI platforms, GPU clusters and vector databases benefit from the same approach, since they are expensive to leave running and hard to rebuild by hand.
Ryz Terraform engineers and DevOps engineers codify infrastructure in your AWS or Azure accounts, working on your team.
