Definition: Site reliability engineering (SRE) is a discipline, started at Google, that applies software engineering to operations, using automation, measurable reliability targets and blameless learning to keep production systems available and fast.
SRE teams define service level indicators (SLIs), such as latency or error rate, and service level objectives (SLOs) that set targets for them. The gap between the target and 100 percent is the error budget: while budget remains, teams ship freely; when it runs out, reliability work takes priority.
Practices include reducing manual toil through automation, on-call rotations with clear runbooks, incident response, blameless postmortems, capacity planning and load testing. SRE depends on strong observability.
DevOps is a broad culture of shared ownership between development and operations; SRE is one concrete way to practice it, with specific roles and metrics. Both rely on CI/CD and infrastructure as code.
