Remote work for senior software engineers in Canada, on US teams
Being senior on a US team is less about years and more about how you work. Here is what teams expect and how we assess it.
By the Ryz Labs team · Updated October 2026
Ryz Labs works mainly with senior engineers: people who have shipped systems to production and can join a US company’s team and contribute in their first weeks. You work remotely from Canada, during US business hours.
What senior means on a US team
There is no magic number of years. What sets a senior engineer apart is how much responsibility they take on without close supervision:
- Ownership: taking a problem end to end, from understanding the request to measuring the result in production.
- Technical judgment: choosing between options with clear trade-offs, and explaining them.
- Quality: tests, observability and code reviews that raise the bar for the team.
- Communication: flagging risks early, asking for context and writing clearly.
- Making the team better: documenting, mentoring and leaving things better than you found them.
Signals we look for in interviews
Our interviews are about real work, not puzzles. Concrete examples help:
- A system you designed or ran in production, and what you would change today.
- A hard incident or bug: how you found the cause and what the team learned.
- A contested technical decision: the options on the table and why you picked one.
- A time you negotiated scope or timelines with product.
What the work is like
You become part of a US company’s product team and report to its engineering leads. You pick up tickets from the same backlog, review pull requests and join the team’s rituals. Ryz works with growth-stage startups and with Fortune 500 engineering teams alike.
Everything happens in English and in real time with the team, so clear communication matters as much as technical depth: explaining a decision, asking for context and pushing back when something does not add up.
How the selection process works
- Apply. You apply through the Join the team page with your experience and main stack.
- AI-assisted technical interview. A structured technical conversation about your real experience. People make the decisions, not the AI.
- Interviews with Ryz recruiters. They go deeper into your experience, how you work and how you communicate.
- Introduction to the team. When a team matches your profile, we introduce you. The last step is a final interview with that team.
Only the top 1% make it: of the tens of thousands of engineers we interview, very few join a team, so we take every step seriously.

How many years of experience do I need?
There is no fixed minimum. What counts is having shipped systems to production and working independently. In practice, that usually comes after several years on product teams.
Do you consider intermediate engineers?
The focus is senior engineers. If you are close to that level, apply once you have clear examples of ownership in production.
Is there room for tech leads or staff engineers?
Yes. Several teams want someone who, beyond writing code, guides technical decisions and supports the rest of the team.
Do the interviews include coding exercises?
The technical stages centre on your real experience and on how you reason through concrete problems in your stack.
Do I need to relocate or get a US visa?
No. You work remotely from Canada. What you need is a solid connection, a quiet place for meetings and availability during US business hours.
