Remote QA automation engineer work from Canada, on US teams
What US teams look for in a QA automation engineer, how working their hours from Canada plays out and how the Ryz Labs process works.
By the Ryz Labs team · Updated October 2026
Ryz Labs places senior QA automation engineers on US companies’ teams. You work remotely from Canada, on US business hours, with the same tools, meetings and leads as the rest of the team.
What the work is like
You join the engineering team of a US company and report to its technical leads. You take part in stand-ups, code reviews, planning and demos like anyone else on the team. Ryz works with Fortune 500 engineering teams and with fast-growing companies.
How your day lines up with a US team depends on your province:
- Ontario and Quebec (Eastern Time): the same clock as New York.
- Atlantic Canada: one hour ahead of New York in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI.
- Manitoba (Central Time): the same clock as Chicago; Saskatchewan matches Chicago in winter and Denver in summer.
- Alberta (Mountain Time): two hours behind New York.
- British Columbia (Pacific Time): the same clock as California.
Teams expect senior engineers to raise risks early, scope their own work and keep stakeholders informed without being asked.
What US teams look for in a QA automation engineer
Teams that deploy several times a day need reliable automated tests. They want engineers who design a test strategy, not just write scripts.
- End-to-end: Playwright, Cypress or Selenium.
- APIs: tests with Postman, REST Assured or pytest.
- Continuous integration: tests on every pull request and clear reporting.
- Strategy: the testing pyramid, test data and flaky tests.
- Performance: k6 or JMeter.
- Mobile: Appium or native tools when the product calls for it.
Before your interviews
Before your interviews, have clear answers on topics like these:
- Deciding what to automate and what to leave out.
- Stabilizing a suite full of flaky tests.
- Managing test data and environments.
- Adding tests to the pipeline without making it slow.
How the selection process works
- Apply. You apply through the Join the team page with your experience and main stack.
- AI-assisted technical interview. A structured technical conversation about your real experience. People make the decisions, not the AI.
- Interviews with Ryz recruiters. They go deeper into your experience, how you work and how you communicate.
- Introduction to the team. When a team matches your profile, we introduce you. The last step is a final interview with that team.
The bar is high: only the top 1% of the tens of thousands of engineers we interview make it onto a team.
Who we look for
- Senior experience with QA automation, with systems in production.
- Clear, confident spoken and written English for daily teamwork.
- Based in Canada and available during US business hours.
- Ownership: taking an ambiguous problem all the way to production.
- Comfort with asynchronous work across time zones.

Does manual QA experience count?
As a foundation, yes. But teams mostly want automation: maintainable test code wired into the pipeline.
Which language should I automate in?
TypeScript, Java and Python are the most common. Know one well, along with its test framework.
How is AI used in the selection process?
One stage is an AI-assisted technical interview. It structures the process, but people make the decisions: Ryz recruiters review every profile.
How long does the process take?
It depends on your profile and on which teams are growing at the time. The stages are always the same, and you will know where you stand.
What kinds of companies will I work with?
US companies across industries, from growth-stage startups to Fortune 500 engineering teams.
Which hours will I work?
US business hours, with the overlap each team needs. Where you are in Canada shapes how your day lines up with East or West Coast teams.
