Software development and AI pod teams for energy and utilities
Senior engineering teams that build meter data, grid, field service and customer systems, and AI pods that ship forecasting and inspection tools to production.
By the Ryz Labs team · Updated October 2026
Ryz staffs senior Latin American engineering teams for utilities, renewable developers, energy retailers and oil and gas companies: meter data pipelines, DER and grid integrations, GIS and field service apps, and customer platforms. Our AI pod teams build load forecasting, asset inspection and contact-center agents in your cloud and ship them to production. Teams work on US business hours, including New York hours, so they overlap with your control room, IT and operations staff.
Energy software sits next to physical infrastructure and long-lived vendor systems: a CIS replaced once a decade, SCADA that can't go down, and regulators who review rates and reliability. Trusted by Fortune 500 engineering teams, Ryz brings engineers from the top 1% of the tens of thousands we interview, and they work on your team, in your repos and change processes.
What we build for energy and utility teams
- Meter data and AMI pipelines. Interval data from Itron, Landis+Gyr or Sensus head-end systems into a meter data management system and a cloud warehouse, with validation, estimation and editing (VEE) rules applied consistently.
- DER and DERMS integrations. Connecting rooftop solar, batteries, EV chargers and smart thermostats through IEEE 2030.5, OpenADR 2.0 and OCPP, so demand response events and aggregation programs work at scale.
- GIS and network models. Esri ArcGIS Utility Network migrations, data quality tooling, and services that keep GIS, outage management and asset systems in sync.
- Field service and mobile apps. Work order apps for crews that run offline, inspection checklists with photos and GPS, and integrations with SAP PM, IBM Maximo or ServiceNow.
- Customer platforms. Self-service portals, outage maps and alerts, start/stop/move flows, rate comparison tools and Green Button Connect My Data for sharing usage with third parties.
- Customer information system integrations. APIs and event layers around SAP IS-U / S/4HANA Utilities, Oracle Customer Cloud Service or Oracle CC&B, so digital channels don't wait on batch jobs.
- Renewables and trading tools. Asset performance dashboards from plant historians, interconnection queue tracking, and data pipelines for scheduling and settlement with ISOs such as ERCOT, PJM and CAISO.
- Emissions and sustainability reporting. Pipelines that calculate and trace Scope 1, 2 and 3 data back to meter and fuel records.
Where AI pods help in energy
Energy AI has to earn trust from operators, and it rarely gets to touch control systems directly. Our AI pod teams build tools that inform people and planners, with clear boundaries.
- Load and renewable forecasting. Feeder- and substation-level load forecasts and solar and wind output forecasts that combine weather models, AMI data and calendar effects. The challenge is handling DER growth and extreme weather days that look nothing like history, and backtesting against them.
- Asset inspection with computer vision. Models that flag damaged poles, cross-arms, insulators and vegetation encroachment in drone and helicopter imagery, ranked for an inspector to confirm. Labeling strategy and false-negative rates matter more than headline accuracy.
- Outage and storm contact-center agents. Voice and chat agents that take outage reports, give restoration estimates from the OMS and set up payment arrangements during high-volume events. Our pods have shipped an AI voice platform with more than 1M outbound calls and a driver-support agent in three languages; see the case studies.
- Revenue protection and anomaly detection. Scoring meters for tamper signals, theft patterns and failing equipment from interval data. One of our pods built fraud detection for a global fleet company that has confirmed $5.94M in fraud, validated by the client's fraud team. The same pattern applies: features from your own history and a review queue for investigators.
- Document intelligence for regulatory and engineering records. Search and extraction across rate case filings, interconnection studies and maintenance manuals using retrieval, with citations back to the source page.
Regulations and constraints our engineers work within
- NERC CIP. The Critical Infrastructure Protection standards govern BES Cyber Systems, electronic security perimeters and personnel access. Access to in-scope systems runs through the utility's own CIP-004 program, and many teams keep outside engineers on the IT and data side of the boundary. Our engineers have experience working within those programs.
- FERC orders. Order 2222 on DER aggregation in wholesale markets and interconnection reforms such as Order 2023 shape the data and integrations utilities and developers need.
- OT security standards. IEC 62443 for industrial control systems, the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, and TSA security directives for pipeline operators.
- State utility commission rules. Disconnection protections, billing accuracy, data access rules and customer privacy requirements vary by state PUC.
- Customer data privacy. CCPA/CPRA and other state laws, plus utility-specific data privacy rules for energy usage data.
- PCI DSS for bill payment channels.
Ryz does not claim NERC CIP compliance or any certification for its teams. Our engineers work under your access controls and change management.
Integrations and data
- Operational systems: SCADA, ADMS, OMS and EMS from vendors such as GE Vernova, Hitachi Energy, Schneider Electric and Oracle.
- Historians: AVEVA PI (formerly OSIsoft PI) and other time-series stores, read through approved interfaces.
- Protocols and standards: DNP3, Modbus, IEC 61850, CIM (IEC 61968/61970), MultiSpeak, OpenADR, IEEE 2030.5 and OCPP.
- Enterprise: SAP, Oracle Utilities, IBM Maximo, Esri ArcGIS and ServiceNow.
- Data platforms: Databricks, Snowflake or Azure Data Explorer for interval and sensor data, built by our data engineering teams.
How teams engage Ryz
- Staff augmentation. Add senior data, backend or mobile engineers to your team for a CIS cutover, a GIS migration or a customer portal rebuild. See hire data engineers.
- Dedicated development team. A Ryz team owns a scoped system, such as an AMI data platform or a DERMS integration layer.
- AI pod. A pod of senior engineers, including a tech lead and an ML engineer, builds forecasting or inspection models in your AWS or Azure account and runs them to production.
The steps are Talk, Match, Join and Grow. Typical cost is $7,000–$15,000 per engineer per month: mid-level $7,000–$10,000, senior $10,000–$15,000, leads $15,000+. Five senior engineers at $12,000 a month for eight months is $480,000. You get a plan, a price and the names of the people before you start.
When Ryz isn't the right fit
- You need engineers with hands-on access to NERC CIP medium- or high-impact systems who must meet residency or on-site requirements your program sets. Plan that boundary with us first.
- You need protection engineers, field technicians or licensed professional engineers rather than software teams.
- You want a management consultancy for a utility-wide transformation program, or a packaged grid analytics product rather than a team that builds.

FAQ
Can your engineers work on NERC CIP systems?
Access to BES Cyber Systems is controlled by your CIP program, including personnel risk assessments and access authorization under CIP-004. Most clients have our engineers build on the IT and data side, such as AMI analytics, customer platforms and forecasting, with OT data delivered through approved interfaces. We scope that boundary with your compliance team before work begins.
How do your engineers handle regulated utility and customer data?
They work in your environment, under your access controls, logging and change management, and data stays in your accounts. Ryz does not claim NERC CIP, SOC 2 or other certifications; our engineers have experience working within those programs and your security policies.
Can AI forecasting handle extreme weather?
Only if it's tested on it. Our pods backtest forecasts on past heat waves, cold snaps and storms, combine weather ensembles with AMI data, and show uncertainty bands so planners know when to trust the number.
What does an energy software team cost?
Typical rates are $7,000–$15,000 per engineer per month by seniority. Cost is team size times months times rate; three senior engineers at $11,000 for six months is $198,000.
Do you work with oil and gas and renewables companies too?
Yes. Our teams build data platforms, field apps and analytics for upstream and midstream operators and renewable developers, as well as utility customer and grid systems.
