Google Cloud vs Azure: which cloud fits your enterprise

Azure wins where the company already runs on Microsoft identity, licenses and .NET; Google Cloud wins where analytics, Kubernetes and Gemini drive the roadmap.

Pick Azure when your company already runs on Microsoft: Entra ID for sign-in, Microsoft 365 for collaboration, Windows Server and SQL Server licenses you can carry over, and .NET or Power BI teams who know the tooling. Pick Google Cloud when the roadmap is driven by analytics and AI on fresh foundations: BigQuery as the warehouse, GKE for containers, Gemini models, and a simpler global network. Azure holds the larger market share, but Google Cloud is growing faster, and both are mature enough that your existing estate should decide.

Market position

Per Synergy Research Group, the Q2 2026 cloud infrastructure market reached $143.4 billion, with Microsoft at 20% and Google at 15%, and Synergy notes both are growing substantially faster than Amazon. Developer usage is closer than market share suggests: the 2025 Stack Overflow Developer Survey shows 26.3% of respondents using Azure and 24.6% using Google Cloud. Azure's revenue lead comes largely from enterprises that buy it alongside Microsoft 365 and server licenses, not from developers choosing it in isolation. If AWS is also on your shortlist, compare it in AWS vs Azure and AWS vs Google Cloud.

Identity and the Microsoft estate

This is the factor that settles most Google Cloud vs Azure decisions, and it is rarely about the cloud itself. If employees sign in through Entra ID, your conditional access policies, device compliance rules and group memberships already live in Microsoft's directory. Azure role assignments use those same identities, so a new subscription inherits your security posture on day one. Google Cloud can federate with Entra ID through workforce identity federation or SAML, and plenty of enterprises do exactly that, but it is one more integration to build, monitor and explain to auditors.

The reverse is true for companies on Google Workspace. Cloud Identity is the same directory, and Google Cloud's resource hierarchy (organization, folders, projects) maps cleanly onto Workspace groups. Azure works fine with external identity providers, but you lose some of the integration that makes Azure attractive in the first place.

Licensing follows identity. Organizations with Software Assurance can apply existing Windows Server and SQL Server licenses through Azure Hybrid Benefit. Microsoft's page claims up to 85% savings versus pay-as-you-go for SQL Server and up to 80% for Windows Server when combined with reservations, with the usual caveat that results vary by region and instance.

Performance and platform

Network

Google Cloud VPCs are global: one network spans every region, with subnets per region and global load balancing on Google's private backbone. Azure virtual networks are regional, connected through peering, Virtual WAN or hub-and-spoke designs. For a globally distributed application, Google's model needs less plumbing. For a hybrid estate with ExpressRoute circuits into existing data centers, Azure's model maps directly onto what network teams already run.

Kubernetes

Google created Kubernetes, and GKE Autopilot remains a reference for hands-off node management. Azure has closed much of the gap: Microsoft's AKS tier documentation recommends AKS Automatic for most production workloads, preconfigured with the Standard tier, support for up to 5,000 nodes and a 99.95% API server uptime SLA when availability zones are used. AKS's Free tier has no financially backed SLA, so do not run production on it. For whether you need Kubernetes at all, see Kubernetes vs ECS; the same reasoning applies to Cloud Run and Azure Container Apps.

Data and analytics

BigQuery is Google Cloud's strongest single argument. It is serverless, separates storage from compute, and per BigQuery pricing charges $6.25 per TiB scanned on demand with the first 1 TiB each month free, or slot-based capacity for predictable spend. Azure's answer is Microsoft Fabric, which bundles data engineering, warehousing, real-time analytics and Power BI into shared capacity units. Per Fabric pricing, a one- or three-year reservation saves about 41% versus pay-as-you-go. BigQuery suits SQL-heavy teams that want minimal operations; Fabric suits organizations whose analysts already live in Power BI. Azure Databricks, a first-party Azure service, is the usual choice for Spark-heavy work (see Snowflake vs Databricks).

AI and machine learning

Both clouds now offer multi-vendor model catalogs, so "which models can I call" is less decisive than it was in 2024.

Choose by your primary model family and where your data sits. Gemini-first work and BigQuery-resident data point to Google Cloud. OpenAI-first work, Copilot extensions and data in Fabric or SharePoint point to Azure. Our Bedrock vs Vertex AI and Bedrock vs Azure OpenAI guides cover the model platforms in more depth.

Cost

Discount mechanics differ more than list prices do.

Common leaks on both: idle non-production environments, analytics queries without partition filters (expensive on BigQuery on-demand), oversized Fabric or Databricks capacity, and egress between clouds when data and applications are split.

Hiring market

Azure skills are widespread in enterprise IT, especially among engineers who came up through Windows, Active Directory, SQL Server and .NET. Google Cloud skills cluster in data engineering, analytics and container platforms, so finding a BigQuery or GKE specialist is easier than finding a general Google Cloud administrator. Cloud fundamentals transfer, and a strong engineer from either side becomes productive on the other within weeks; the slow parts are identity models, networking and each cloud's operational quirks. When to pick Google Cloud

When to pick Azure

Many enterprises end up with both: Microsoft 365 and Azure for corporate systems, Google Cloud for an analytics or AI platform. That works when each cloud has a clear charter. Write down which workloads belong where, federate identity once, and treat cross-cloud data movement as a priced design decision.

How Ryz fits

Ryz Labs cloud engineers work on Google Cloud and Azure estates for enterprises across industries. Only the top 1% of the tens of thousands of engineers we interview make it, and they work on your team on US business hours with same-day code review. Hire Azure developers, cloud engineers or Vertex AI engineers individually, or bring in a dedicated team for a landing zone or cloud migration. When the target is an AI system, our AI pod teams build it in your Google Cloud or Azure tenant and ship it to production.

Typical cost is $7,000 to $15,000 per engineer per month: mid-level engineers run $7,000 to $10,000, seniors $10,000 to $15,000, and leads are quoted per team. If you need a board-level cloud strategy without engineers who build, a management consultancy is the better fit.

FAQ

Is Google Cloud or Azure better for enterprises?

Azure usually fits enterprises standardized on Microsoft identity, licenses and productivity tools, because it inherits that estate with the least integration work. Google Cloud usually fits enterprises whose new investment is in analytics, containers and Gemini-based AI. Both meet enterprise security and compliance needs.

Which is cheaper, Google Cloud or Azure?

It depends on the workload. Google Cloud applies sustained use discounts automatically and offers committed use discounts up to 55% for most machines. Azure offers reservations up to 72% and Azure Hybrid Benefit for existing Windows Server and SQL Server licenses, which often makes Microsoft workloads cheaper on Azure.

Which has more market share, Azure or Google Cloud?

Azure. Synergy Research put Microsoft at 20% and Google at 15% of worldwide cloud infrastructure services in Q2 2026, behind Amazon at 28%. Synergy also reports that both Microsoft and Google are growing faster than Amazon.

Is BigQuery or Microsoft Fabric better for analytics?

BigQuery is a serverless warehouse billed per TiB scanned or by slot capacity, and suits SQL-first teams that want little to operate. Fabric bundles warehousing, data engineering and Power BI into shared capacity, and suits organizations already built around Power BI. Test your heaviest queries and refresh patterns on both.

Can I use Claude or OpenAI models on both clouds?

Claude is available on both Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry. OpenAI's flagship models are offered through Microsoft Foundry on Azure, while Google Cloud centers on Gemini plus partner and open models. Check model and region availability for your specific deployment before you commit.
