Definition: Microservices is an architecture style that builds an application as a set of independently deployable services, each owning one business capability and its data, communicating over APIs or events.
Each service has its own codebase, release cycle and often its own database. Services talk over HTTP or gRPC APIs, or through events. They are commonly packaged in containers and run on Kubernetes, with an API gateway in front.
Teams can deploy, scale and change services independently, choose suitable technology per service, and limit the impact of failures. This fits organizations with many teams working on one product.
Microservices add network calls, distributed data and operational overhead such as monitoring, tracing, service discovery and versioning. Many teams start with a modular monolith and split out services only where independent scaling or ownership justifies it. Breaking up a monolith is a common part of legacy modernization.
Ryz Kubernetes engineers and back-end developers design and run service architectures, working on your team.
