Definition: Legacy modernization is the process of updating or replacing outdated software, infrastructure or mainframe systems so they are easier to change, secure, integrate and run, while keeping the business running during the transition.
Options range from light to heavy: rehost (move to the cloud as is), replatform (minor changes to use managed services), refactor (restructure code), rearchitect (for example, break a monolith into services or expose APIs) and rebuild or replace. Many programs mix approaches per system.
Successful programs start with an inventory of systems, dependencies and business rules, then move in increments. The strangler pattern is common: new services gradually take over functions from the old system behind a stable interface until the legacy code can be retired. Automated tests, data migration plans and CI/CD reduce risk at each step.
Legacy systems are often expensive to maintain, hard to staff and difficult to connect to modern data and AI workloads. Paying down technical debt this way unlocks faster delivery.
Ryz teams take companies off mainframes and legacy stacks with API-first rebuilds, for example in Python, working on your team. See mainframe modernization.
