Definition: A discovery phase is the initial stage of a software or AI project in which a team clarifies goals, users, requirements, risks and technical approach before committing to a full build.
Activities include stakeholder interviews, reviewing existing systems and data, mapping user journeys, defining success metrics, prototyping risky parts, and estimating scope, timeline and team. For AI work, discovery also checks data availability and quality and whether a model can plausibly meet accuracy targets.
Common outputs are a prioritized backlog, an architecture outline, a risk list, a cost estimate and a plan for an MVP or proof of concept. These often feed a statement of work.
Discovery is cheaper than building the wrong thing. It is usually time-boxed to keep momentum, and it works best when the people doing it are the engineers who will build the system.
Ryz scopes every team with you up front through AI consulting and planning: you get a scoped plan, a price and the names of the people who would do the work.
