Definition: Cloud migration is the process of moving applications, data and infrastructure from on-premises data centers, or from one cloud provider to another, onto a cloud platform such as AWS, Azure or Google Cloud.
AWS describes seven approaches, often called the 7 Rs: retire, retain, rehost (lift and shift), relocate, replatform (minor optimizations such as managed databases), repurchase (move to SaaS) and refactor (rearchitect for cloud-native services). Most portfolios use several at once.
Assess the portfolio and dependencies, build a secure landing zone, migrate in waves starting with lower-risk workloads, validate performance and cost, then optimize. Data migration and cutover planning usually take the most care.
Unplanned cost growth, hidden dependencies between systems, downtime during cutover, and simply moving technical debt to new servers. Pairing migration with legacy modernization and infrastructure as code helps avoid repeating old problems.
Moving data to the cloud is often a prerequisite for AI, since managed model services and scalable compute live there.
Ryz cloud engineers plan and run migrations to AWS and Azure, including mainframe exits, working on your team. See cloud migration services.
