Definition: PII redaction detects and removes or masks personally identifiable information, such as names, emails, account numbers and addresses, from text, documents or logs before they are stored, shared or sent to an AI model.
Detection combines pattern rules for structured data such as phone and card numbers with named-entity recognition models for names and addresses. Detected values are deleted, masked, or replaced with placeholders or reversible tokens that only authorized systems can map back, which keeps text readable for the model.
Privacy laws such as GDPR and CCPA, plus sector rules, limit how personal data is processed and shared. Redacting before calling an external model, and before writing prompts to logs, reduces exposure if a vendor or log store is compromised.
Teams place redaction in the LLM gateway or data pipeline, measure recall on real samples since missed entities are the main risk, and pair it with access controls and retention limits rather than relying on it alone.
Ryz data engineers and security engineers build privacy controls into AI pipelines in your cloud, working on your team.
