Definition: An LLM gateway is a proxy layer between applications and model providers that centralizes access, routing, authentication, logging, rate limits and cost controls for every AI call.
Applications call one internal endpoint instead of each provider directly. The gateway holds provider keys, translates requests to each API, applies routing and fallbacks, caches repeat responses, and records prompts, outputs, tokens and latency. Options include open-source proxies, cloud services and in-house builds.
Without a gateway, every team integrates providers separately, keys spread across codebases and spend is hard to see. A gateway gives platform and security teams one place to enforce policy, such as PII redaction and guardrails, and to switch models without changing application code.
The gateway becomes critical infrastructure, so it needs high availability, low added latency and clear ownership. It is often the first building block of an internal AI platform.
Ryz AI engineers and DevOps engineers build LLM gateways in your AWS or Azure accounts, working on your team.
