Definition: Kubernetes is an open-source container orchestration platform that automates deploying, scaling, networking and healing containerized applications across a cluster of machines.
A cluster has a control plane and worker nodes. Pods are the smallest unit and hold one or more containers. Deployments declare how many replicas should run, Services give pods a stable network address, and Ingress or gateways route outside traffic. You describe the desired state in YAML and Kubernetes continuously works to match it.
Self-healing restarts, rolling updates, autoscaling and a consistent way to run microservices across clouds. Managed offerings such as EKS, AKS and GKE handle the control plane.
Kubernetes schedules GPU nodes for training and model serving, and is a common base for self-hosted open-weight models.
For a few services, managed container or serverless platforms often cost less to run and operate. The guide on Kubernetes vs ECS compares options on AWS.
