Definition: A forward-deployed engineer (FDE) is a senior engineer who builds and ships software or AI systems directly in a client's environment, working alongside the client's own team. Instead of handing over a finished product, the FDE writes production code in the client's cloud accounts, repositories and tools.
An FDE sits close to the business problem. They meet users, map the data and systems involved, and turn a vague goal into working software. Typical work includes integrating language models with internal data, building APIs and pipelines, wiring up evaluation and monitoring, and getting the system through security review and into production.
The role mixes software engineering with client-facing skills: scoping, explaining tradeoffs to stakeholders, and making decisions quickly with incomplete information.
Companies bring in FDEs when an AI or software initiative needs senior builders who can work in their existing stack, follow their security rules and ship to production, rather than produce a prototype or a slide deck.
Ryz provides forward-deployed engineers from the top 1% of senior talent, working in your cloud and repos on your team, often as part of an AI pod.
