Definition: AI agent memory is the set of techniques that let an agent keep and reuse information across steps and sessions, such as conversation history, user preferences and facts learned while completing tasks.
Short-term or working memory is what fits in the model's context window during a task. Long-term memory is stored outside the model, often in a vector database, a regular database or a knowledge graph, and retrieved when relevant. Some designs separate episodic memory (what happened), semantic memory (facts) and procedural memory (how to do things).
Models do not remember previous calls on their own. Without memory, agents repeat questions, lose track of long tasks and cannot personalize their help.
Teams decide what is worth saving, how to summarize old history, when to forget, who can see stored data, and how to stop wrong or injected content from being saved and reused later.
Ryz AI agent developers design memory, retrieval and permissions for production agents, working on your team.
