Definition: Agentic AI is an approach to building software in which language models plan steps, call tools and take actions toward a goal with limited human supervision, instead of only answering a prompt.
An agentic system gives a model a goal, a set of tools such as APIs, databases or search, and rules about what it may do. The model breaks the goal into steps, acts, checks the results and adjusts. A single AI agent can do this alone, or several agents can split the work in a multi-agent system.
The engineering work sits around the model: tool definitions, permissions, memory, guardrails, evaluation and logging, so that every action can be traced and reviewed.
Classic generative AI produces text for a person to act on. Agentic AI acts in other systems, so it can finish multi-step work such as triaging tickets, reconciling records or preparing documents. That also raises the stakes for testing, access control and human approval points.
Teams usually start with one well-scoped workflow that has clear rules and a measurable outcome, keep a person in the loop for high-impact actions, and widen autonomy as evaluation results improve.
Ryz AI pod teams and AI agent developers build agentic systems in your cloud and repositories, working on your team.
