Ruby on Rails developer job description template (2026)
A complete Ruby on Rails developer job description you can copy, with Rails 7 and 8 specifics, seniority levels and tips for attracting experienced engineers.
By the Ryz Labs team · Updated October 2026
A Ruby on Rails developer job description should describe the shape of your Rails app as much as the role. Most Rails jobs are on mature, revenue-generating monoliths, and senior candidates want to know how big the codebase is, which Rails and Ruby versions it runs, whether it is a classic server-rendered app with Hotwire or an API behind a React front end, and how healthy the test suite is. The template below targets a senior Rails developer working on a large production monolith. Copy it, replace the bracketed details and remove anything that does not apply to your team.

Job title
Senior Ruby on Rails Developer (Product Engineering)
Employment type: full-time or contract. Location: remote, with at least four hours of overlap with US Eastern time.
About the role
We are looking for a senior Rails developer to build and improve [product name], a [SaaS platform / marketplace / workflow tool] used by [customers]. You will ship product features across our Rails monolith, work directly with product managers and designers, and help keep the codebase fast to change as it grows. We run Rails 7.2 on Ruby 3.3 with Postgres, Redis and Sidekiq, deployed on [Heroku / AWS / Kamal]. Our front end uses [Hotwire / React]. You will join a team of [number] engineers and report to [title].
Responsibilities
- Ship product features end to end in Rails: models, controllers, views or API endpoints, background jobs and tests.
- Design ActiveRecord models and associations, write efficient scopes and prevent N+1 queries with includes, preload and strict loading.
- Plan Postgres schema changes that are safe on large tables, using tools such as strong_migrations.
- Build and maintain Sidekiq or Solid Queue jobs with idempotency, retries and clear failure handling.
- Write fast, reliable tests with RSpec or Minitest, and keep the suite and CI time under control.
- Build interactive UI with Turbo and Stimulus, or well-designed JSON APIs for a separate front end.
- Untangle overgrown models and callbacks by extracting service objects, form objects or Rails engines where they help.
- Find and fix performance problems using rack-mini-profiler, APM traces and Postgres query plans.
- Upgrade Rails and Ruby versions and keep gems current, including resolving deprecations.
- Review pull requests, share Rails conventions and help newer developers find their way around the monolith.
Requirements
- 5+ years of professional software development, with at least 4 years building production Rails applications.
- Deep knowledge of Rails conventions and internals: ActiveRecord, ActiveJob, ActionCable, routing, callbacks and concerns.
- Strong Ruby skills, including blocks, modules, metaprogramming and when to avoid it.
- Solid SQL and Postgres experience: indexes, EXPLAIN ANALYZE, locking behavior and writing queries ActiveRecord cannot express cleanly.
- Experience with background job systems such as Sidekiq, including queue design and handling retries safely.
- Experience testing Rails apps with RSpec or Minitest, factories and system tests.
- Experience working in a large, long-lived Rails codebase and improving it incrementally.
- At least one Rails major version upgrade completed in production.
- Clear written English for pull requests, design notes and async communication.
Nice to have
- Hotwire experience (Turbo Frames, Turbo Streams, Stimulus) or React with a Rails API.
- Modularizing a monolith with Packwerk or Rails engines.
- Static typing tools for Ruby such as Sorbet or RBS.
- Deploying Rails with Kamal, Docker or Kubernetes.
- Experience with Rails 8 defaults: Solid Queue, Solid Cache and the built-in authentication generator.
- Open source contributions to Ruby gems or Rails itself.
Tech stack
Ruby 3.3, Rails 7.2, Postgres, Redis, Sidekiq, Hotwire (Turbo and Stimulus), RSpec, FactoryBot, RuboCop, Docker, GitHub Actions, AWS (ECS, RDS, S3), Datadog. Replace with your actual stack; Rails developers look for versions and the front-end approach first.
What success looks like in 6 months
- You have shipped several customer-facing features and are the go-to person for at least one area of the monolith.
- You have made a slow page or job meaningfully faster, or reduced CI time for the team.
- You have untangled a problem area of the codebase, such as a model with too many callbacks, with tests to back it.
- You have contributed to, or led, a Rails or Ruby version upgrade.
How to apply and interview process
Send your resume or LinkedIn profile and a short note about a Rails app you have worked on and something you changed in it. Our process has four steps: a 30-minute intro call, a technical conversation about a system you have worked on, a practical exercise or pairing session on a realistic product problem, and a final conversation with the team you would join. We aim to give feedback within a few days of each step.
Junior vs mid vs senior Ruby on Rails developer
Rails makes it easy to build quickly, and that same speed lets large apps become hard to change. Seniority in Rails shows up in how someone keeps a growing codebase healthy.
| Level | Scope | Typical experience | Key skills |
|---|
| Junior | Contained features and bug fixes following existing patterns, with close review | 0-2 years | Ruby basics, MVC, ActiveRecord queries, ERB views, writing RSpec or Minitest tests |
| Mid-level | Product features end to end, including jobs, migrations and front-end interactions | 2-5 years | ActiveRecord performance, Sidekiq, Hotwire or API design, testing strategy, debugging production errors |
| Senior | Codebase health, architecture of large modules, upgrades and performance for a team | 5+ years | Rails internals, Postgres tuning, safe migrations at scale, modularization, upgrade planning, mentoring |
Tips for writing a Ruby on Rails developer job description that attracts senior talent
- Describe the monolith honestly. Give a sense of its age and size in your own terms, and whether it is healthy or in need of care. Experienced Rails developers often want legacy work, but they want to know before they join.
- State your Rails and Ruby versions. An app on Rails 4 or Ruby 2.x means upgrade work. Say whether that is the main job or a side project.
- Name the front-end approach. Hotwire, a React single-page app or a mix each require different skills. Rails candidates have strong preferences here.
- Mention test suite and CI health. A sentence about how long CI takes and how often tests flake tells candidates a lot about daily life on the team.
- Explain product ownership. Rails developers are often product engineers who talk to users and shape features. Say how much input the role has on what gets built.
- Avoid "Ruby ninja" language. Describe concrete problems, such as modularizing a large codebase or speeding up background processing, instead of adjectives.
- Say how you deploy. Heroku, Kamal and Kubernetes imply different operational duties for the developer.
Skip the job post: hire a vetted senior Ruby on Rails developer
Senior Rails developers are usually busy, and a job post can take months to land the right person. If you need senior Rails capacity sooner, Ryz Labs can match you with senior Ruby on Rails developers from Latin America who work on your team, work in your repos and join your standups within an hour of US time zones. Only the top 1% of the engineers we interview make it through our vetting, which covers Rails internals, ActiveRecord performance, testing and working in large codebases.
Our staff augmentation model lets you add one Rails developer or several without changing how your team ships. Ryz engineers work on your team and report to your leads. Talk to us to scope the team you need. If you are still interviewing on your own, our Ruby on Rails interview questions cover what we test and what strong answers sound like.
FAQ
What should a Ruby on Rails developer job description include?
A clear title with seniority, your Rails and Ruby versions, the front-end approach, a short honest description of the codebase, specific responsibilities, realistic requirements, your tech stack, what success looks like in the first months and the interview steps.
Should a Rails developer also know JavaScript?
Some JavaScript is almost always needed. With Hotwire, that usually means writing Stimulus controllers. With a React front end, the expectations are much higher. State which model you use so candidates can judge whether the role fits their skills.
How important is Rails upgrade experience?
Very important for senior roles on older apps. Upgrades touch gems, deprecations, test suites and deployment, and a developer who has done one in production will plan the next with far fewer surprises. For newer apps on current versions, it matters less.
