Definition: Intelligent document processing (IDP) uses AI to classify documents, extract data from them and validate the results, turning unstructured files such as invoices, contracts and forms into structured data for business systems.
A pipeline ingests files, runs OCR or a multimodal model to read them, classifies the document type, extracts fields and tables, checks values against rules or other systems, and sends low-confidence results to human review. Language models have made IDP more flexible on layouts it has not seen before.
Typical use cases include invoice processing, lending and underwriting packages, insurance claims, identity verification documents, contract review and compliance checks on marketing materials.
Teams track field-level accuracy, the share of documents processed without human touch, and review time, and keep an audit trail of what the system extracted and what people corrected.
Ryz AI pod teams have built document AI in production, including marketing compliance review for a leading alternative asset manager across 8,000+ documents, cutting review from days to hours.
